Bring It Like a Broad: Bitty-Broad Isis Brown Faces Her Bullies

Bring It Like a Broad: Bitty-Broad Isis Brown Faces Her Bullies

Today is one of my favorite days of the month! That’s because it’s the day we publish our monthly series, Bring It Like a Broad!  I love it because it’s a chance to celebrate females, and all we are capable of .

Remember, the purpose of this series is to highlight real ladies who are doing or have done the extraordinary. Our goal in celebrating these special people and their accomplishments is that each of us will be encouraged to believe in the possibility of our own goals and dreams. We also hope that seeing these women changing the world will blaze paths for all the little girls out there who will grow up someday and want to join their ranks.

This month’s Broad is actually one of those little girls. We’ll call her a Bitty-Broad. In fact, when the following events unfolded, she was only in 7th grade! Which just goes to show, we can learn things from our kids every day. Sometimes they display wisdom and courage far beyond their years, as did our Bitty-Broad.

THE BROAD

Imagine being named after an Egyptian goddess. Now imagine that goddess represents magic and healing, and was one of the most important deities in Ancient Egypt. Pretty cool stuff, no?

That’s how our Bitty-Broad, 14-year-old Isis Brown felt. In fact, people would often tell her how beautiful and unique her name was. She was proud of her name.

Then, around 2013, her name became famous. Unfortunately, as I’m sure you know, it wasn’t the kind of “famous” a 7th grader, or anyone, wants. The news outlets began extensive coverage of a terrorist group called the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, or ISIS. If there’s one thing the media loves, it’s nicknames. So the term ISIS became a household name.

Little Isis Brown from Oklahoma was suddenly thrust into the spotlight at school. People no longer complimented her on her unique name. Instead, they called her a terrorist. They accused her of killing Americans, saying they saw her on the news. She could hear the kids whispering behind her back, calling her a killer and anti-American.

It began to have a detrimental effect on Isis. She started avoiding certain classes, hiding out in places where she wouldn’t be bullied. She would often come home from school crying.

But it didn’t just affect her school life. Kids took to Facebook to make fun of Isis. The bullying even began to destroy one of her favorite hobbies, deejaying. Many gigs she had lined up dropped her because of her name. Music was one of the biggest parts of her life. Can you imagine having so much of your life turned upside down, just because of your name? Now imagine that happening to you at 14-years-old. It would almost be impossible to bear.

Finally, our Bitty-Broad reached her limit. She could not go on letting these kids bully her, without sticking up for herself. Isis didn’t go to her principle privately, or ask her parents to intervene. No, she was even more courageous than that. She took to Facebook and created a video to address her tormentors.

In the video, she encouraged other people who share her name to be strong, remember what their name means, and not cower or avoid places where bullies will be. “No, you be the bigger person and show you’re not putting up with this anymore.” she stated. “That you can fight this battle, that you’re not going to let some wannabe bullies pick on you.”

She concluded the video by saying, “So you kids out there with the name Isis, “Love your name, cherish your name. I’m still learning – and I know you guys are too – but, in all reality, you’re named after a goddess. You’re not named after the terrorist group.”

Do you know what happened? The kids at school apologized! They now describe her as being brave and strong.

FINAL THOUGHTS

There are a few things I really love about our Bitty-Broad’s experience.

First, it is incredible to see such a young girl gather the amount of courage Isis did, and face her fears. Remember, courage is not lack of fear. Courage is taking action despite being afraid.

Second, Isis went through three years of torment before she made this video. Sometimes, it takes us a while to get up the gumption to defend ourselves, and that’s okay.

Third, you don’t have to save the lives of thousands of people, or become the CEO of a huge company to be considered brave. Sometimes, a little girl in Oklahoma can show just as much courage as anyone else. In fact, when you show courage in the small things in life, it helps you to stand tall in the bigger things.

Lastly, you never know who you can learn a life lesson from. It’s not always the old experienced people that have profound wisdom. Sometimes we can learn as much from the bravery of one little girl, as we can from volumes of historical figures that changed the world.

Isis Brown is one of my personal heroes. She has taught me that your voice, no matter how small, can influence and help others. She also reminds me that your name isn’t who you are. No, it’s the way you live your life that defines your true character.

iBbeautiful Subscription Box: January 2018 Unboxing

iBbeautiful Subscription Box: January 2018 Unboxing

iBbeautiful is a super cute subscription box for teen and tween girls. To get an idea of what kind of box this is, check out the company’s mission statement:

“iBbeautiful’s mission is to help young girls realize they are beautiful just as they are without comparisons to how others look or act.  We do this by offering a monthly box of inspiration that includes fun lifestyle items and a message of empowerment to help young girls be confident, smart, brave, unique and kind.  Every girl should be confident that she will become the woman she is meant to be and can achieve anything she sets her mind to.”

What’s not to love about that? I’ve been searching for the perfect sub for my step daughter P, and I finally found it in iBbeautiful!

Each iBbeautiful box is filled with 4-6 fun and girly makeup and accessory items. You can choose either the tween (age 8 to 12) or the teen (age 13 and up) box, and either the basic box ($24 per month) or a graphic tee box ($34 per month).

iBbeautiful also has bonus boxes available with special themes (ex: best friends) or for special occasions (ex: birthdays). Check them out here.

P is pretty mature for her age, so I get her the teen graphic tee box ($34 per month).

This is the second month we have received this box, but our first time reviewing. Let me tell you, after two months, P LOVES this box! I love it too, mainly because iBbeautiful focuses so much on sending girls positive messages about themselves. Check out the box to see of it might be the right fit for a girl you know! Don’t forget to grab your 10% off discount code at the end of this post!

THE BOX:

This is iBbeautiful’s January Teen box:

Let’s dig in!

Every box includes a card like this explaining the company’s mission:

iBbeautiful always includes neat postcards and stickers with positive quotes and mantras. I like these because P can put them up in her locker, or frame them if she wants.

This is postcard size:

This one is more like a business card size:

Okay, so the first item P grabbed was this adorable purple mesh bag. It includes a sticker with another positive phrase on it, and this bracelet.

I really love this bracelet! Its so simple but super adorable! The key goes with one of the month’s themes, “Confidence is key.” I can’t find this exact bracelet online, but very similar ones are priced at about $10, so we’ll go with that.

Next up is LA Girls Colour Pop nail polish in the shade “Extra! Extra!”

This is a cute shade! I’m such a sucker for glitter and confetti! LA Girl carries this polish in a bunch of different colors, too. You can get it here for $4.

Okay, now we have this nice little addition to the box, Jean Pierre Cosmetics Moisturizing Lip Mask. It comes with five masks!

I love lip masks. We live in Arizona and it gets very dry here, so lip masks are great! P has never tried one, so she will have fun with it!

You can get a very similar set by Jean Pierre Cosmetics here for only $9.99.

Moving on, we have another super cute piece of jewelry, embracing the “Confidence is key” mantra.

I love how delicate this is! P isn’t a huge fan of gold, but she didn’t seem to mind too much with this. I love that it’s gold plated and made in the USA.

In fact, I’ll probably buy myself one, because it’s such a great everyday piece. Get it here for $9.89.

Next up is the Manna Kadar Liplocked Priming Gloss Stain.

I forgot to check which shade this is before P took it home with her, but it looks to me like “Siren” or “Pinot Noir.” Very pretty! Get it here for $22.09.

Lastly, we have this month’s graphic t-shirt.

It’s a nice Olive green color, and brings the “Confidence is key” them full circle. P loved it!

While I can’t find this exact shirt online, similar ones are priced at around $15, so that’s what we’ll go with.

THE VERDICT

iBbeautiful got it right this month. Their selection of items is perfect for P’s taste. She really loves this box!

The total approximate value of this month’s box is $70.97. Not bad for a $34 box. That means the value is double the cost.

So far, there hasn’t been one item that P hasn’t liked. Of course, we are only two months in, but that’s a good sign!

Make a teen or tween in your life happy by signing up for this box here.

Also, iBbeautiful has created an EXCLUSIVE special discount code just for readers of The Bonafide Broad! Make sure to enter BONAFIDE10 in the appropriate box during checkout to receive 10% off your first monthly box!

NOTE: This discount code applies to subscriptions ONLY, not one-time or individual products.

Caio broads!

Geek Fuel December 2017 Unboxing

Geek Fuel December 2017 Unboxing

Geek Fuel is a monthly subscription box that appeals to gamers, pop culture geeks, movie lovers, collectors, and more.  I get it for my 12 (almost 13) year old stepson, D.  However, this box isn’t just for boys. Geek Fuel has a huge variety of different subscribers, male and female, young and old.

Their website explains that each box is guaranteed to have at least $50 worth of merchandise. Since the box only cost you $24.90 (that’s $18.90, plus $6 shipping & handling) a month, that’s a pretty darn good value!

The types of items you get in your box include toys and action figures, household goods, limited edition comics, collectibles, everyday essentials, hard cover books, exclusive t-shirts, and downloadable games.

Every box is guaranteed to have a cool t-shirt, AND a full-size downloadable STEAM game. Those were the two main reasons I picked this subscription box for D over all of the others out there. He loves STEAM games, and always wears fun comics/pop culture t-shirts, so it’s perfect for him!

Let’s check out what December’s Geek Fuel box has to offer!

The Bonafide Broad is not affiliated with or sponsored by Geek Fuel in any way. We purchase a monthly subscription like everyone else. However, if you sign up for a subscription for Geek Fuel through our referral link, we receive a $5 credit for the referral.  Subscribe here!

The Box

Here’s December’s box:

Just looking it over I’m getting excited! Lots of goodies!

So first of all, every month you get a copy of GeekFuel magazine. Its filled with fun stories, gift ideas, recommendations, interviews and more.

Who doesn’t love Gremlins? I know I do!

Another thing you always get is an information card describing the items in the box. Here is the front, and I’ll show the back when we look at the T-shirt, because it explains that.

So as usual, I always go for the shirt first. This shirt is so fantastic!

Here’s the back of the information card describing the shirt. Every month they have a promotion where you can take a selfie in the shirt and possibly be featured in the next issue of Geek Fuel magazine. How rad is that?

To determine the value of the items from Geek Fuel can be difficult, because most of them are made exclusively for the company, so you can’t get them anywhere else. This is almost always the case with their t-shirts. After looking up similar types of shirts, I put the approximate value of this shirt at $20.

The next two items are collectors pins. You get a lot of collectors pins from Geek Fuel and my step son loves them. The first in this box is a classic,  from Super Mario Kart, and of course, it’s upside down. Good job to me!

The second pin is from Stranger Things. I haven’t watched the show yet, so I’m unfamiliar with the nuances, but D was excited!

Again, these are collectors items exclusive to Geek Fuel. I usually guess the value of these pins to be around $5 each, so $10 for both.

Next up is a Star Wars item. This is a very cool and high quality leather key fob. Nice! You will get either the Rebel or the Imperial key chain. Love that D got the Rebel one.

You can find this same item here, from Amazon for $11.95.

I received an email telling me there would be a South Park item in December’s box, so I’m super stoked! It’s Kidrobot! Whoop whoop! It’s the exclusive glitter edition, and comes with a custom play set.

Again, this is a Geek Fuel exclusive item. It’s similar to this version, which sells at Best Buy for $9.99. However, this one looks nicer than the Best Buy one, so I’m gonna say its value is about $14.99.

Last but certainly not least, is this month’s STEAM card. It’s called Poncho, and is about a little robot in a poncho. Cool beans!

As it says on the card, this game is valued at $5.

The Verdict

That, my Broads, is December’s Geek Fuel box. Let’s see the value!

Remember, the cost for this box is $24.90. Adding up everything, it looks like the approximate worth for December’s box is $61.94. That’s almost three times what I paid. Not bad at all!

What do you Broads and Bruts think?

Gift Guide for Teenage Boys: 30 Awesome Ideas

Gift Guide for Teenage Boys: 30 Awesome Ideas

Do you need gift ideas for teenage boys? I know I do. I’ve never been a teenage guy, so when it comes to getting gifts for my stepson D, I need a guide to tell me exactly what teenage boys like!

Why are teen boys so difficult to shop for? And forget about asking them what they want. All I’ve ever gotten in response to that question is “Uhhh…” and “Well…” and “I’m not sure.” Helpful, right?

So I spent some time researching and digging around, spying on random teen boys, digging through their trash cans to collect data….and have come up with what I think is a pretty fantastic compilation of gift ideas for teen boys. Enjoy!

Parrot Mambo Fly Minidrone

Drones are all the rage. This one is great, because not only is it affordable, but your teen can control it with their phone. It will also teach them some basic coding skills! It’s safe to fly inside and outside, too.

Only $99.99! Get it here.

GeekFuel Subscription Box

Leonardo Davinci Inspired Clock

Speaking of Davinci, this is such a cool looking piece! It’s a reproduction of one of Leonardo Davinci’s sketches. It’s great because it doesn’t require nails or glue, it just snaps together. Keep in mind that this is an educational toy, and it doesn’t run like a regular clock. It winds, but the power won’t last a long time. It’s designed to teach your kid how Davinci’s mind worked. Plus it’s hella cool looking!

Only $13.99 ! Get it here.

Walkie Talkie Set

What teenage guy (or any guy for that matter) doesn’t want a basketball hoop in their bedroom? They’re using the garbage can already, so why not give them this awesome over-the-door hoop? The Manual to Manhood by Jonathan Catherman

I’m pretty picky about getting books for teen boys, because a lot of times they’ll just sit on a shelf and collect dust. Only $6.10! Get it here.

The Box

I just love how cram packed the box is full of fun goodies. Let’s dive in chicas and chicos!

So first of all, every month you get a copy of Geek Fuel magazine. Its filled with fun stories, gift ideas, recommendations, interviews and more.

Like most subscription boxes, Geek Fuel includes an information card detailing the items in the box, like so:

I always like to check out the t-shirt first, and November’s is stuffed into a super cool box, which is obviously Jurassic Park related. Whoop whoop!

This shirt is too cool! It features Isla Nublar, and the graphic is wicked cool. Totally digging “Life Finds a Way!” D loved the shirt this month, too.

There is this cool info card featuring the shirt, as well as a promotion where you can take a selfie in the shirt and possibly be featured in the next issue of Geek Fuel magazine. How rad is that?

It’s hard to determine the EXACT value of some of the items that come in the Geek Fuel box, because many of them are exclusive to the company. I’ll try my best.

I googled Isla Nubler t-shirts, and there were quite a few between $15-$20. We’ll go with that.

The next item I am drawn to is the cool little Deadpool Plush toy. We knew there would be a Deadpool item in this month’s box, and Deadpool just so happens to be D’s favorite superhero, so YES!

LOVE that he is white instead of red. It just makes it a little more unique.

You can get the red version of this on Funko Mopeez: Marvel – Deadpool Action Figure“>Amazon for $10.48.

Next up are the Kom-Bot Edition Epic Enamels. I love that Geek Fuel sends collector pins. D can put these on his jacket, his backpack, or anywhere he wants. They are super cool, and great quality too! I like that this month gave us a set of two pins instead of the standard one. Another win!

I can’t find anything regarding price for these pins because they are exclusive to Geek Fuel, so I’m going estimate they are worth about $10 for both.

The next item is amaze-balls! It’s from Star Wars Rogue One, ans it’s a collectible 3D wood model. I like this because not only is is wicked neat looking, but D has to build it. Anything to get the kid doing something besides being glued to the TV.

You can get this wood model on Incredibuilds Star Wars Rogue One: At-Act 3D Wood Model and Book“>Amazon for $16.99.

Moving on, we have a pretty fantastic seasonal item, wrapping paper. Not just ANY wrapping paper either. These have to be the funkiest, most fun wrapping paper sheets I’ve seen in a while. I was surprised how much D and Mr. OG like them, too.

Again, these are exclusive to Geek Fuel, so I’ll have to estimate their worth. Based on wrapping paper prices, and how unique these are, I’ll value them at about $8.

Last but not least, we have our monthly STEAM game. This one is called Lumini. The STEAM website says of the game: “A long-forgotten species, a hostile planet and a journey of discovery! Welcome to the world of Lumini – split and reform your swarm, evolve and discover new abilities to bring the Lumini back to their former glory…”

FUN!

Determining the value on this one was a cinch because it says right on it that it has a $13 value. Nice!

The Verdict

That, my Broads, is November’s Geek Fuel box. Pretty great, I’d say, but let’s check the total value of the whole box to be sure.

Remember, the cost for this box was $24.90. Adding up everything, it looks like the approximate worth for November’s box is between $73 and $78. I’d say that’s fantastic. Its triple the price I paid, and I love hearing that!
